This article, by Richard Susskind, reports on First Law's management of a competitive legal tender for the General Medical Council. The GMC was seeking lawyers to advise on the conduct of formal complaints against doctors. 15 law firms submitted their tenders in a pre-specified, electronic form. This ensured uniformity of presentation and enabled easy comparison among the submissions. Glossy brochures, traditionally the hallmark of many so-called beauty parades, were not allowed and paperwork was kept to a minimum. Mills & Reeve won the work.
